Washington Palm (Washingtonia robusta)
- Hardy, slow growing, evergreen palm with dark green,fan-shaped leaves forming a compact crown on a tall, slender, grey trunk.
- Use in tropical gardens as a single feature plant or in groups of varying heights or to line up a driveway. Can also be grown in large containers in a courtyard, verandah or atrium.
- Position: full sun in well drained soils. Will tolerate alkaline soils and light frosts.
- Water requirements: very low once established.
- Size: can reach 20 metres (in decades) with a 2-3 metres crown of foliage.
- Use nitrogen-rich fertiliser in spring and summer to encourage healthy new growth.
