Kale is an easy to grow brassica which is rich in vitamins and minerals, especially Vitamins A and C, Iron, Calcium and Potassium.
Kale prefers full sun and a rich well drained soil but will also grow in less than perfect soil. It does best in cool weather, frosts will sweeten the plant.
It can be used by either picking the outside leaves as it is growing or picking the whole plant when it is mature. Young leaves can be used in salads, mature leaves are better cooked.
Sow seed in a seed bed and transplant when seedlings are 7-10cm high. The soil should be limed and rich compost or manure applied prior to sowing.
As they are growing it is recommended a side dressing of Sulphate of Ammonia be applied.
