One of the greatest new plant releases in recent years has come from Paradise Plants. It is Camellia Avalanche and it is in their Slimline range which means it stays narrow and columnar – great for the modern day smaller gardens. Avalanche is the perfect name as it has the shape of a mountain in the alps and flowers the colour of snow. It is one of the sasanqua camellias which are more structural in their branches than the old japonicas and make better plants for hedging and tend to take more sun so can be planted in more suitable positions.
The ‘Paradise’ brand was created by Mr Bob Cherry in the early 1970’s. Bob developed one of the largest nurseries in Australia and it traded as ‘Paradise Plants’ for more than 40 years.
Slimline Avalanche features a stunning lightly scented pure white floral display in the Autumn months. The narrow column like growth makes Slimline Avalanche excellent for container or specimen planting (eg either side of a path or doorway) or for screening or hedging in tight or narrow garden beds. Slimline Avalanche can also be clipped to a neat column or conical shape once established.
This outstanding new Camellia is upright and slender and will flower all autumn long with lightly perfumed double white blooms. Avalanche is an upright, slender Camellia that will thrive in sun or part shade. Hardy once established it flowers early and in abundance making it perfect choice for hedging pots or as a standalone feature.
Small to medium sized double flowers cover these plants from Autumn to winter and there is very little of the yellow stamen you see prominently on a Setsugekka camellia.
Slimline Avalanche will grow Australia wide and is tolerant of both heat and light frost, but may need protection in extreme situations.
