You’ve got to admire ingenuity. This guy Peter is over 90 years of age and a few years back, he got his son to put these baths up on solid wood stands so he didn’t have to bend over. As it turns out, they grow vegetables beautifully and of course drain very well. Real do-it-yourself stuff !
You must remember when doing something like this that you need to over engineer with the construction. People underestimate the weight of potting mix and then watering it and how much weight it can add to the weight of the planters. There have been many stories of people putting large planters on old decks and balconies and causing them to become damaged from the weight.
These have been built using solid treated pine posts (probably cemented in) and strong cross bracing. Peter says they have never been a problem and have stayed solid.
Its also a simple construction with regard to the netting and laundry pegs – and keeps pesky birds, possums and white cabbage butterflies out.
The real beauty of systems like this for the elderly, is of course working at waist height. It can extend your life as a veggie gardener by many years, and prevent back problems. It just makes life easier for yourself. Have a look at Vegepod and Vegtrug systems to see how simple it is to buy a waist height kit if you don’t want to have a bath.
There is nothing like a bath. You can take your time, and not be rushed like a shower. You can also take it outside, and use it for your vegie garden !
