Indian white guavas are an attractive tree with smooth bark that produce prolific quantities of fruit. Their fruit is an excellent source of vitamin C and can be eaten fresh, stewed, juiced or made into jam.
They are an adaptable tree that can tolerate frost and some drought once matured. They are an evergreen tree that’s leaves turn an attractive dull maroon during winter. In the Melbourne climate they can also be semi-deciduous. They require a full sun position and protection from strong winds.
Plant while the weather is warm. Dig a hole wider but no deeper than the pot the guava has come in. Avoid disturbing the roots while taking the plant out of the pot and placing it in the hole. Backfill progressively, removing any air pockets as you go. Water in well and mulch the soil to retain moisture. Water regularly during fruit development.
Fertilise with a high-nitrogen NPK fertiliser. The tree can be pruned before new growth in spring to shape and encourage new growth. Fruit grows at the base of current seasons growth so avoid removing too much of the bearing wood.
